Today marks my eighth wedding anniversary.
In October 2018, I married my husband, Bruce. Our wedding day was filled with love, joy, and memories I will always treasure.
One of the most meaningful moments was when my son Marcellus gave a speech. He told Bruce to take care of me. Then he said, “My mother will take care of you because she takes care of me.”
Those words meant so much to me then, but they hold an even deeper meaning today. Marcellus understood how we cared for one another, and he trusted Bruce with my heart.
As I celebrate my marriage today, I am also missing my son.
I am grateful for my husband and the life we have built, while still wishing Marcellus were here to celebrate with us. One feeling does not cancel out the other.
Celebrating my anniversary does not mean I have forgotten my son. Missing him does not take away from the happiness and love in my marriage.
Today, I am making room for all of it—the love, the memories, the gratitude, and the sadness.
If you are missing someone during a meaningful moment, remember that your heart can hold more than one emotion at a time.
Midweek check-in: What emotions are showing up for you today?
If you feel comfortable, share your thoughts in the comments.
